Superfici America and Milesi Wood Coatings Working Together to Elevate Wood Finishing

In a recent episode of Coating Connections, the spotlight was on innovation, collaboration, and next-level efficiency in the world of automated wood finishing. Superfici America teamed up with Milesi Wood Coatings to demonstrate the power of combining advanced coating products with state-of-the-art automated finishing systems.

This partnership aims to provide turnkey solutions that meet the evolving needs of manufacturers—particularly those working with interior doors and wood components—by streamlining their finishing processes without compromising on quality.

Demonstrating the Future of Finishing

During the episode, the team ran trials using a variety of stains and coatings—including waterborne and solvent-based systems. Highlights included:

  • A water-based spray stain paired with a 2K acrylic self-sealing topcoat in a smooth, low sheen.

  • A 2K polyurethane self-sealer that dries fast, sands easily, and delivers a silky finish with a 24-hour pot life.

Versatility was key—these coatings worked seamlessly with automation to offer flexibility for different production lines. With Superfici’s system design, users can run primer, sealer, and topcoat through a single machine, minimizing waste and simplifying changeovers.

Automation Meets Innovation

The equipment lineup included Superfici’s Mini Plus (one-arm) and Compact (two-arm) reciprocating spray machines, supported by a suite of cutting-edge drying technologies:

  • Laminar Flat Dryers for ultra-fast surface drying (as quick as 3.5 minutes to the touch!)

  • Jet air blade ovens and catalytic IR-powered DryVault batch ovens

  • DryVault batch over with precision-controlled convection drying with adjustable cycles

These technologies collectively ensure not only speed but consistency—eliminating common finishing bottlenecks and boosting overall throughput.

Efficiency, Safety, and Savings

As shops adopt automation, finishing departments are becoming the new production choke points. Superfici’s approach reduces that stress by creating systems that are easy to run, even for teams cross-trained from woodworking roles.

Features like touchscreen operation, remote control, and enclosed spray booths mean operators have less direct exposure to paint—reducing odor, off-gassing, and other workplace concerns.

On the quality control side, automated systems regulate coating thickness precisely, reducing waste and ensuring top-tier results. Cameras inside the equipment allow for real-time monitoring, while apps track paint usage and production data from anywhere.

Changing Minds, Changing Markets

One of the more intriguing discussions centered around breaking the stigma around polyurethane coatings. Once seen as complicated, Milesi’s formulations are proving to be more user-friendly than ever—offering superior durability and ease of application compared to traditional conversion varnishes.

Automation is becoming the natural next step for shops that have already optimized their woodworking processes. And with high-end finishes and cleaner, more professional workspaces, owners and operators alike are finding renewed pride in their products.

The Takeaway

This collaboration between Superfici America and Milesi Wood Coatings sets a new benchmark for what’s possible in the wood finishing industry. With the right combination of coatings, equipment, and expert training, manufacturers can achieve exceptional results faster, cleaner, and more consistently than ever before.
