Hartley Group and Superfici America Tackle Stains, Automation, and Innovation
In a recent lab session at Superfici America, Lab Manager Bret Johnson welcomed Scott Hart, owner of Hartley Group, for a day of collaboration, testing, and industry insight. Together, they explored how close partnerships between equipment and coatings manufacturers can drive success for finishing departments of all sizes.
Spray Stains on the Rise
Spray stains—both water-based and solvent-based—are seeing a significant uptick across the industry.
“We’re up 30–40% in spray stain demand right now,” said Scott. “It’s a great time to refine finishing cycles.”
Using Superfici’s automated spray machine, the team sprayed challenging shaker-style cabinet doors, achieving high-end results with one coat of stain, a sealer, and a topcoat.
Solving the Shaker Door Challenge
Shaker doors are a known pain point in finishing, especially with stain. Halos and inconsistent coverage often plague flatline systems. But through careful lab work, Bret and Scott dialed in settings that eliminated common issues.
“We modified the formulation and machine settings to build a complete finishing cycle that solved the problem,” said Bret.
Why Lab Trials Matter
Scott emphasized the value of conducting pre-trials in a controlled lab environment:
Test multiple coating chemistries and equipment settings
Shorten commissioning time after purchase
Solve climate or process variables up front
“The lab gives us the chance to work out everything in advance, so startups go smoothly and customers see immediate results.”
Repeatability Through Automation
As labor challenges continue, automation is proving to be more essential than ever.
“This machine runs 24/7 with consistent output,” Scott explained. “Once we program recipes for stains, primers, sealers, or topcoats, we can hit the same finish quality day after day.”
Automated systems also allow for:
Improved cost-per-square-foot tracking
Consistent finish quality
Faster training and ease of operation
DryVault: Versatile Drying for Water-Based Coatings
Scott also highlighted the value of Superfici’s new DryVault batch oven, especially for hybrid finishing operations using both automation and hand spray.
“It’s ideal for parts that can’t go into traditional ovens,” said Scott. “The stage drying, airflow, and temp control make it perfect for water-based finishes, which are growing fast due to VOC restrictions.”
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for ICRO
As a coatings partner, Hartley Group is helping lead the way with ICRO’s next-generation products:
Water-based finishes that rival traditional 2Ks
Higher solids, faster drying times, and 1K simplicity
“Our goal is to deliver top-tier performance with better environmental profiles and easier application,” Scott added.
Stronger Partnerships, Better Finishes
The collaboration between Superfici and Hartley Group demonstrates the power of partnerships in solving industry challenges and advancing finishing technology.
“Working with Bret and the Superfici lab team is huge for us,” said Scott. “We walk in with an idea and walk out with a solution.”
